I am applying to East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL) because of its well-known reputation as a leading legal studies institution, as well as its strong emphasis on international law, both of which are perfectly aligned with my academic and professional objectives. My ambition is to specialise in AI governance within international law, and I believe that ECUPL's academic excellence and innovative approach to global legal challenges will provide the ideal platform to accomplish this. The university's relationship with influential figures like Cao Jianming reflects its significant impact on global legal discourse, which motivates me to pursue my PhD here.
My professional experience as a law graduate, as well as my current master's studies in International Relations and East Asia at the University of Sheffield, have provided me with interdisciplinary knowledge and a critical understanding of sociolegal frameworks. These experiences, combined with my research interests in AI governance, copyright law, and ethics, enable me to contribute to and benefit from ECUPL's vibrant academic environment.
Aside from academics, my friendships and experiences at the University of Sheffield have deepened my understanding of Chinese culture. Many of my closest friends are Chinese, and I actively participate in cultural activities like KTV gatherings and hotpot meals, which have given me a better understanding of Chinese traditions and community values. My girlfriend, who is also Chinese, has encouraged me to learn more about the language, food, and culture.
I intend to apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship so that I can fully devote myself to my academic and cultural pursuits in China. Shanghai, as a global hub for law and commerce, provides unrivalled opportunities for intellectual development and cultural exchange.
